In this year’s federal funding process, Congress held the window of opportunity open for nearly a million children and families. Head Start and Early Head Start were prioritized by many and we received a $409 million increase over last year’s level. This number allows Head Start to avoid turning away any children and families who currently attend Head Start and gives us a slight increase to strengthen quality.

My child attends the Monetta/barnwell/aiken headstart. We have had NON STOP issue with the bus that takes my child to and from headstart. I was informed that the trasportation was part of the funding that is allocated. I was shocked to hear this. In the rural town that I live in, transportation is as necessary as the education itself. IF a child cannot get to school then how will they be educated? I , a parent of 4 children, was not aware of the fact that there was NO funding for buses. I know that if I am shocked that a lot of parents would be shocked as well if they KNEW. Please help our school. We need a new bus or a working bus. This situation is no safe for our young children. Head Start is a wonderful program that offers love and support to meet the needs of the families that are served, whether it be through health, dental, encouragement, resources or a big hug just to show them someone cares when they're having a bad day. Head Start is a great program for the whole family. It helps prepare the kids for kindergarten, both academically and socially and is a great resource for helping meet the needs of the family in an array of ways. Many of the families involved have made new friendships, found a place to live, went back to school, found jobs, learned english, learned new ways of parenting, and the list goes on. Thank you so much for continuing to support the Head Start program here in Michigan. I know this program can make all the difference in the lives of young children and their families because myself and my children are living proof that Head Start works. I started out as a parent receiving public assistance just as my parents had all my life. When my children entered the program this opprotunitty allowed me to have the only postive daily experiences with others that was available to me at the time and this taught me that there is a better way of life for me and my children. Today, sixteen years later I have been employed with the Head Start program for almost twelve years now. I am currently a center director and lead teacher with one degree and I am almost finished with a second degree in early childhood education. Head Start helped me break the cycle of poverty for myself and my children and allowed me to embrace life for the first time. I do not believe I could have risen to the the heights myself and my children have achieved without this awesome program and the fantastic teachers who guided and encouraged my children and myself.
